Sickness and the body are first viewed in a metaphysical context that depicts their purpose within the ego's dream of separation. Regarding dreams as fulfillments of wishes, following Freud's definition, we understand how the ego's dream fulfills its purpose of keeping separation real in our minds without any sense of personal responsibility for our condition. It becomes a dream of victimization with the highly vulnerable body as the primary instrument of victimization. Sickness, therefore, regardless of its form, is seen as a shadow of a belief in sin and guilt that we have made real in our minds. The body and the world, thus, are the source of neither sickness nor healing. The healing of sickness rests on our being able to look with Jesus at our decision to push love away and blame something outside ourselves for our plight. Our joining with Jesus in this way removes the cause of all sickness. These themes are discussed in the context of readings from the two pamphlets, The Song of Prayer and Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process and Practice, and various passages from the text and manual for teachers.
